Tuesday night update

Not much to say about a no-pad practice to end two-a-day Tuesday, the Raiders' last practice before Thursday's exhibition opener against the Cowboys at The Coliseum.

But here goes anyway ...

** Rookie strong safety Mike Mitchell did not practice after appearing to injure his hamstring in the morning workout.

Mitchell hurt his hamstring during a May minicamp and took a month to recover. Raiders coach Tom Cable will say if Mitchell is playing Thursday, and give other lineup news, after a Wednesday morning walk-through in Napa.

** Free safety Michael Huff returned to practice despite sore ribs, and it's a good thing. If Mitchell is out, Huff is just one of four safeties on the roster. Somebody has to take snaps against the Cowboys.

** The Raiders recently showed an interest in former Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks, according to Brad Biggs of the National Football Post.

Biggs cited a league source and also said their current interest level is unknown.

Brooks reportedly visited the Saints on Tuesday.

** Samson Satele has taken all the first-team snaps at center in camp, but don't rule out John Wade just yet. If Satele doesn't get more consistent, Wade will be given a chance to take the job.

Wade competed for the job last year but lost out to Jake Grove.

** One play I liked: Fullback Lorenzo Neal making a one-handed catch on the side and churning upfield, running nothing like a 38-year-old.

** One play I didn't like: JaMarcus Russell soft-tossing an end zone lob that was so short, Nnamdi Asomugha intercepted it in front of Tony Stewart ... while coming back to earth on his leap. The toss was that slow and easy to read. A fitting end to a pretty bad day.
