Schilens loss is big for Oakland

The news that Oakland receiver Chaz Schilens broke a bone in his left foot isn't devastating to the Raiders.

But it's a big blow.

He is one of the Raiders' best offensive players and he has a chance to become one of the league's best young receivers.

He still can become a factor in 2009, but it just may take a while. There is no real timetable on Schilens' return, but it will likely be at least 4-6 weeks.

Schilens was terrific against Dallas last week with five catches for 52 yards. He had the look of a legitimate No. 1 receiver.

Oakland will miss him when he is gone. But don't lose hope for this kid. He can still come back and help Oakland this season.

In the meantime, Oakland needs top pick Darrius Heyward-Bey to emerge quickly and hope that veteran Javon Walker returns to form. Walker has been working out on his own and he has looked great. He hopes to return to practice next week.

If Walker can be a factor it will ease the pain of the Schilens loss.
