The Saints apparently are not the only team interested in veteran free agent linebacker Derrick Brooks, who is trying to get back in the NFL after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February.

The Oakland Raiders reportedly flew the 11-time Pro Bowl player out for a visit and workout Friday, two days after Brooks left New Orleans without a contract offer from Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis.

Loomis and Saints Coach Sean Payton are expected to make a decision this weekend with regard to Brooks and free agent linebacker Derek Smith, both of whom worked out for the team Wednesday morning.

Loomis said a decision on either player may or may not be forthcoming, indicating the team might not sign either player and therefore would not have to announce anything.

"There's nothing magical about tomorrow," Loomis said at halftime of the Saints' 17-7 exhibition victory against the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday night at the Superdome. "We just said we wouldn't do anything before tonight."

Asked if the team would announce its decision this weekend, Loomis replied: "It could be tomorrow, it may be never. I just don't know."

Saints linebacker Mark Simoneau underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn right triceps, prompting the team's interest in Brooks, 36, and Smith, 34. Simoneau remains on the team's active roster.
